12 January 2012

We had a very quiet Christmas and New Year as we were (and still are) missing Bonnie Bon-Bon.  What I didn't get to tell you last time I wrote was that on 22 December mummy had agreed to foster another Maltese x Shih Tzu dog.  She has fitted in quite well with us all and she now has a new name "Holly" and she is my new sister!  Holly will be staying with us permanently now.  She is quite a bit bigger than me even though we are the same type of doggie.  Mummy thought she might be a very large Low Chen but the vet's records have her as a Maltese x.  Holly keeps trying to play with Cino but he just gets very cross and over-reacts which Holly thinks is very funny.  Holly and Zoe spent some time last night running across the kitchen floor and sliding which made mummy smile and laugh.

Holly is going to a lot of the Cheeky Pup! classes at the moment so you might get to meet her.  She has very short hair at the moment because her previous owner didn't seem to brush her and she was covered in dense hair mats and the only way we could get them off was to shave her!!  She's a very friendly and gentle girl, but she really loves sitting close to mummy and licking her face all-the-time (even more than I do!).  The problem is she has a bit of dog-breath until she gets her teeth cleaned so all her happy panting makes mum pull a face and she complains about Holly's stinky breath.

Even though Christmas was a little sad, we got some crackin' presents!  Including a set of dog agility equipment - yahoo.  Some of the kindy pups have had a go with the tunnel and hurdles and we've also had a go with the weave poles at home.  We were going to try out the chute this week but mummy went to a Dog Comformation Competition on Sunday and got rained on and caught a cold a lost her voice [sorry if you've been trying to call me but I haven't had much of a voice for the last few days - Dorothy].  I'm sure we'll get to have a go soon though.  Except for Maggie who has managed to hurt her left knee and needs a few weeks of limited movement - hah, I'd like to see that!

Anyway I hope you all had a great Christmas and fun New Years Eve.  Wishing you lots of love, luck and cheeky pups for 2012, Teddy : )

We are all very sad today as my big sister Bonnie went to sleep at 11.02 this morning. Mummy took her to the vet because she had a constant cough, like she was trying to clear her throat. The vet took x-rays and Bonnie had a lot of lung problems and an enlarged heart with what was most likely a cancerous tumour. Because her condition was critical, mummy decided it was best for Bonnie to take away her pain and suffering. Bonnie fell asleep quickly while mummy was holding her and telling her how much she loved her and thanked her for coming into and our lives and making us better. Sleep peacefully Bonnie, we all miss you and love you and will never forget you. Sweet Bonnie Bon-Bon.

23 November 2011

We tried keeping people updated with news via Facebook and Twitter but due to demand we're back on the Cheeky Pup! web page.  A lot has happened in the last few months.  Mum got her licence and can now fit more classes and private training sessions into each week.  More importantly she can go shopping for dog toys in more stores!  We also get to visit a greater variety of dog parks and do walks in different locations too.

Lately a lot of my brothers and sisters have been getting sick or injured - hey, we pups play hard ; )  Bonnie had a cough that mum was worried might be a sign of heart trouble but the vet gave her the all clear, sometimes a cough is just a cough.  Unfortunately for Bonnie, the vet thought she needed some teeth out so she had soft food for a few days but is back munching hard biscuits now.  Zoe had an ear infection, after finally getting over her sinus trouble it seems the bug migrated!  A few weeks of drops in the her ear and she's fine again.  Little Maggie had something wrong with her eye, mum thinks she may have accidentally touched Maggie's eye when she came home from preschool and was trying to pat us all at once.  It's okay now, but still looks a little pink.  Hasn't stopped Maggie barking at me, that's for sure.  Mum says I'm like Justin Beiber and Maggie is my #1 fan.  She's obsessed!!!!

The scariest that happened was when Alfie apparently had a stroke.  Mum was getting our breakfast ready and Alfie hadn't come out of the bedroom.  She went in to get him and he was walking around and around on the bed like he couldn't figure out how to jump off.  When she put him on the floor she noticed his eyes kept going from side to side.  Mum decided then to phone the vet straight away.  They walked into the kitchen and then poor Alfie was sick.  The vet said to bring him in asap.  We were all really worried but were greatful mum was at home when it happened because us dogs wouldn't have known what to do.  The vet diagnosed a stroke and gave Alfie some stuff to relieve the brain swelling, some stuff to stop him vomiting (his eyes going side to side would've been making him feel sea-sick), and antibiotics so he wouldn't catch anything else while unwell.  The vet offered to look after Alfie for 24-48 hours but mum wanted to bring him home.  She cancelled work for a week and spent that time looking after Alfie and the rest of us.

The good news is Alfie is mostly back to normaly.  He stumbles a bit when he walks in the dark sometimes, and his head tilts a little to the left now.  Oh, and he barks when he wants to get back on the bed at night - mum's not happy about that at all.

And then, Cino broke a nail!  Doesn't sound like much but it broke off right up against one of his toes and bled like crazy.

Anyway, we're all much better now.  A big thank you to Dr Bernice at the Mulgoa Vet Clinic for looking after my family (even mum when she got a bit teary 'cos most of the above happened within a 2 week period).  And thanks to everyone for understanding when mum had to cancel lessons for a while.

I promise to keep this page up to date more often.  And remember you can always check out pictures and videos on my Facebook page!

Sorry I haven't updated this page for a while, I've been trying to teach mum how to use her new camera, new phone and how to load things onto the interweb.  She's soooo bad at this stuff she blew up her computer!!! really!!!  Had to find a human who knew what they were doing to get it all better and now it's so fast she keeps accidentally sending or changing things before she means to.  d'oh.

On a different topic, I've been searching the web for new things to put on my Christmas Wish list.   There are some interesting toys that bounce, and can be tuggered, or filled with yummy yummy food at www.gameondogs.com.au  They also have the best pig's ears and bully sticks I've ever tasted.... mmmmmm

Uugghh, the only bad thing about the Million Paws Walk is that mum insists on giving us all a bath and hair cut before we go!!  She said we looked like complete ragamuffins last year because she'd lent her clippers to a neighbour and didn't get them back in time to tidy us up.  Lend them out again I say!  Anyway, I'm off to find something smelly to roll in while she's giving Zoe her bath!  Smell you later : )>

30 April 2010

Maggie came out on her first walk with us today and mum had to carry her home because she was pooped out!  I love going out on our walks and hopefully Maggie will get fit enough to keep up with us for the whole time.  We're also in training for the Million Paws Walk which is a 4km trail - it was brilliant last year.  Dogs and people everywhere!  I only barked at some Malamutes - they always look so scary.  Alfie even barked at a toy one, hah hah.  He felt a bit silly when he realised it wasn't real.  I don't think Maggie will be fit enough to come the walk this year, she'll have to stay at home with Bonnie and Cino and take it easy.  We'll bring them back some snacks, hopefully there will be free pupcakes again this year.

Oh-My-Dog!  I have a new big sister:  Maggie!! : )  She's a Shih Tzu x Maltese like I am.  But Maggie's white and grey like Alfie.  She's 10 years old, but littler than I am.  Mum adopted her because she's really cute, loves to cuddle, and needed a home with someone who could look after her properly as she has diabetes - apparently her previous owners liked to show they loved her by giving her lots and lots of food.  It seems like a nice thing to do but because she put on a lot of weight she developed diabetes and is now on a restricted diet and needs an insulin injection twice a day.  Poor Maggie, it must hurt but she doesn't complain - she just tries to roll onto her back to get a tummy rub before and after her injection!!!  She gets a tummy rub too : )  I hope she likes to play as much as I do, and doesn't try and steal my toys...

8 April 2010

Hooley dooley my mum's brought home two orphaned kittens and she says I can't play with them : (  They're only two or three weeks old and need bottle feeding every three hours, I wish she'd feed me every three hours!!  They make the tiniest little squeaks and get to sleep on a wrapped up hot water bottle.  It's lots of fun barking at them except mum doesn't look too pleased when I do.  I bet she's going to get really tired fast and then I'd better stop barking altogether so she doesn't get too cross with me.  The kittens are only staying for a month until they're big enough to be adopted out.  Then they'll be available from the Great Western Animal Hospital on the Great Western Highway in Pendle Hill.  We'll put some photos of them on my Facebook page soon.  They are super cute...

Wow, it's been a while.  Teddy's been busy making friends on Facebook (hi Buttons).  You can be one of Teddy's friends and see photos and videos from preschool and kindy classes by searching for 'Teddy Smith'.  There are still plenty of images to come so if you don't see your dog yet have a look again in a few weeks.  And there are lots of pictures of Teddy and his brothers and sisters too.

Bonnie is still having trouble walking but is doing her best to carry on.  Physiotherapy is helping but she isn't keen on being massaged with ice - can't blame her for that!  However she does look forward to having her medicine every night, possibly because it comes wrapped in a little ball of mince meat.

Alfie had surgery yesterday to have a wart, which had started bleeding, removed from his side.  He has 14 stitches but is already back to normal behaviour and energy wise.  An added bonus of having the wart removed is that Cino no longer follows Alfie around trying to lick the wart... and both dogs now have better breath : )

Teddy has also organised his own team for the Million Paws Walk to raise funds for the RSPCA.  You can join our team or support us by following the link on the News & Events page.  Or you can go to the Millions Paws Walk website and search for our team, the Cheeky Pups.  Last year's walk was lovely with all the dogs behaving and enjoying a stroll along a sealed track through some bushland around Sydney Olympic Park.  There were even pupcakes handed out at the end of the walk!

Have a safe and fun Easter everyone, and Teddy promises to catch up with you all again soon.

17 December 2009

Teddy's big sister Bonnie is seeing a canine physiotherapist today to see if anything further can be done for her lower back pain and possible arthritis.  Good luck Bonnie, we are thinking of you.  A special thank you to Amanda and Dr Helen Nicholson of the Animal Physiotherapy Services and the ARH at Enfield for the extra special care and attention Bonnie is receiving.

Merry Christmas everyone

If you have the time please take your dog, cat, rabbit, parrot, rat or stick insect to the Paws n Hooves Santa Paws event so they can have their photo taken with Santa for a gold coin donation.  But if you can't make that, there is always the Animal Welfare League's Christmas with the Animals.  Mum's put the info on the News & Events page for you.  I keep asking her to put my first photo with Santa on this site but I think she's a bit computer-challenged!

3 December 2009

OMG - Zoe and Alfie have just come back from the groomer's and their red and green!  They must be part-time Santa's helpers.  I'll have to be extra nice to them so they can put in a special word for me with the big man in the red suit.  Hmmmm what do I want for Christmas.  Turkey and ham for dinner obviously.  A pigs ear is always a great stocking filler... um a new squeaky toy of my own... definitely not clothes please... this needs serious thought!  I'd better decide soon so I can start dropping hints to everyone.  If you know of any fab toys please email my mum on dorothy@cheekypup.net.au and let her know.  Ta, woof.

1 December 2009

A special thank you to Lollie, Lexie and Ellery of Wednesday night's Canine Kindy who let me, Teddy, come along and join the fun.  I was very happy playing with you and enjoyed demonstrating how to learn the sit/stay.  Mum's very proud : ) that should be good for a few extra treats after dinner!! ; )

3 August 2009

Just found out Mum's giving away her recipe for my "Tummy Treats" on the back of every Cheeky Pup Reward Voucher!  Spread the love with your dog (I'm happy to taste test anyone's batch of treats for free!!!!).

I'm also looking forward to catching up with past kindy pups at the lauch of the Emerton Kindy course on Monday 10 August at 10.30am.  If your dog's been to any of our preschools or kindy courses and you haven't received an invitation yet, please phone my mum (Dorothy) on 0433 533 139 to find out where your invitation is.  The more the merrier... although the fewer dogs that come the more food for me... ooooh its a tough call... no, I'd prefer to play with lots and lots of dogs (that I don't live with for a change, except for Cino - I'm always happy to play with Cino, he's my best mate after all).  Cino will be at the launch too.

I bet she'll give me a bath and a haircut on the Sunday before, grumble grumble, just when I get all good and smelly she insists on washing it all away.  Humans!  humph

15 June 2009

Wow, Teddy and I won a runner's up prize at the Million Paws Walk in a competition run by the Pho'dog'rapher!  So we'll be going to the photographic studio in the next couple of weeks to have some pup portraits taken.  How glamorous can Teddy get? He might have to borrow Alfie's bow-tie...

30 May 2009

Teddy's finally recovered from Yappy Hour - so much fun running around with all the other dogs, and eating homemade treats.  Oscar provided plenty of entertainment biting balloons, and little Jack the mini dachshund impressed everyone with his cuteness and smarts.  However it was Teddy's best mate Cino who won everyones heart with his pluckiness; despite having a disability he spent hours running around playing with much bigger dogs and holding his own : )  A great big thank you to everyone who came along and made it such an enjoyable morning.  Thanks to Iris from Party Pets for carrying on with the show despite Bonnie and Zoe trying to upstage her by taking naps in the adorable boat bed, and Clyde 'striking a pose' for the camera at every opportunity.  Dorothy promises to figure out how to get the photos up on the web as soon as possible - but don't hold your breath because she's not a 'techie'.

22 May 2009

Teddy, Alfie, Mickey and Zoe and I all went along to the Million Paws Walk on Sunday along with Oscar the red cattle dog x and his mum Sonja.  We also bumped into Kindy graduate Buttercup the beagle and her family, including the lovely Millie the GSD.

We had a great time!  It was a lovely 3km walk through bushland which the pups enjoyed almost as much as meeting up with all the other dogs at the walk.  Although we missed out on some free pupcakes we did pick up information on how to host a Cupcake Day to raise funds for the RSPCA in August - more information coming on that event soon.

I just wanted everyone to know how proud I am of Teddy and the way he behaved at the walk.  Hardly a bark out of him (except at the occasional passing Husky - but most dogs bark at Huskys, even Alfie barked at a toy one on a display stand!).

So, well done Teddy, for not over-reacting to dogs you haven't met before and enjoying a lovely day out helping raise money to help dogs and cats in need.

*****
Unfortunately I lost some key stuff when the web server was attacked, grrr.

For those of you who have been following Teddy's story, great news:  the Thursday before Good Friday I took Teddy and the gang out of a nice extra-long walk and we came to a park where a 4 year old Maltese called Cindy was playing off leash, and Cindy came running over to us (making lots of polite friendly gestures like front paw raises, and approaching on an angle) and Teddy stayed calm and everyone got to meet and play with Cindy for a little while.  Well done Teddington : ) and thanks Cindy.

So after 5 months of retraining and rehabilitation after being attacked and badly bitten by a large fighting dog it seems Teddy's reactive behaviour has turned a corner.  There's still more to be done to make sure Ted stays a little happy chappy, and he could quite easily bark and lunge the next time he sees a new dog but at least now I know he is capable of being friendly to strange dogs.
